Update on Area 1:

BANGOR - Coming off a very successful fundraising year, the club has been spending their profits on many local organizations in need. They currently have donated to Spruce Run/Womancare (emergency shelters for victims of domestic violence), Good Samaritan (high school education for unwed mothers), Literacy Volunteers, Y-Leadership School, Girl Scouts of Maine, Sarah’s House of Maine (housing for cancer patients receiving treatment in the area but far from home), St. Andre’s Home (house and life-sill learning for human trafficking victims) and Shepherd’s Godparent Home (housing and teaching life skills for unwed mothers and their children, with transitional housing also available), among others. They have provided six (6) $1,500 scholarships to local women and girls. They are currently gearing up for their spring fundraiser, Basket Bingo, and for hosting the Area I Spring Workshop. Both events are in April.

BURLINGTON - Taking a deep breath and briefly relaxing after a very educational and entertaining Fall Conference, the club is busy evaluating and implementing what they learned from others in the District. They are extremely involved in Burlington’s International Women’s Day Festivities. One of the festival’s highlighted organizations this years is the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGS) and the club hopes to get more recognition locally through them. Incidentally, the local Girl Scout troop who volunteered as “pages” for Fall Conference, has seen a great influx of members directly due to their involvement at Conference. Coming up in May is their annual Spelling Bee, their largest fundraiser. Funds from which are donated back in the form of a scholarship to the Champlain College Singe Parent Program.

SOUTHERN MAINE - The members have been busy in Maine and New Hampshire by adopting a family from each state at Christmas, and have extended their donations to two organization in New Hampshire as well as the Alfred Shelter and Caring Unlimited in their home state. The Hackmatack Theater fundraiser was successful again this year, funds from which go in the form of a scholarship to a non-traditional student chosen by the York County Community College. Sadly, the club lost a longtime member recently. Priscille Nolette, will be deeply missed by the club members. She was the driving force behind the success of their largest fundraiser, the Calendar Raffle. The Calendar Raffle takes place during the month of February.

CONCORD - The Concord members have been busy, busy.  They’ve developed a spreadsheet to help them record their upcoming needs throughout the year, updated monthly to reflect their needs for action in Service, Advocacy, etc. They’ve sent a Service Recognition Award application to ZI for their work with Career Connect, a job readiness program for local high school female students including help with resume writing, professional dress, and interview skills. They also continue with the Baby Layette project which helps support mothers with limited means. Helping to celebrate International Woman’s Day in March, is their self-developed Hall of Femme Award. They recognize a woman who has made outstanding contributions to empower women and girls of New Hampshire. The club also awards JMK and YWPA scholarships and their very own New American Merit Award. The members continue to get recognition at every event with their powerful Anti-Domestic Violence posters, which were displayed at Fall Conference.
