Zonta District 1 Fall Conference
Info for Clubs

Reminder: Turn in Credential Cards to Governor Cheryl!!

Each club president should have received two delegate cards (or four if their membership exceeds forty) and the appropriate number of alternate and proxy cards as well. One set for each delegate and alternate or one proxy card must be signed and returned to Cheryl Dorfman by Sept. 30th. The other set of cards must also be signed and brought to Truro by your delegate(s) or the club carrying your proxy.

While the distance and expense is higher for US clubs than in past years, all clubs should strongly consider funding one person, at least, to attend. The conference is in Canada just once every ten years, and our Canadian Zontians nearly always send at least one representative per club to our US based conferences.

Candidate Biographies

Below are the biographical profiles of the candidates running for District officer positions - Governor, Lt. Governor and Treasurer. See you in Truro!

ALISON DRAPER
Zonta Club of Halivax, Nova Scotia
Candidate for Zonta International District 1 Governor 2004-06

I grew up on our family farm and attended school in rural Nova Scotia. Through this experience I learned to appreciate and respect the value of community spirit.

I attended Dalhousie University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1978. Upon graduation I worked as a research assistant in at the Dept of Oceanography, Dalhousie University in Halifax and then SUNY, Stony Brook, NY. In 1981 I returned to Canada to work with a private sector company as a technical analyst in offshore oil and gas exploration.

My involvement in business led me to pursue a career in financial services as a stockbroker. Seventeen years later I continue to enjoy this industry as a member of a financial team at CIBC Wood Gundy.

In 1977 I was invited to be a guest speaker at the Zonta Club of Amherst -- my first introduction to Zonta. The following year I moved to Amherst and I was welcomed into the Zonta Club where I felt very much a part of the community and developed lasting friendships. Unfortunately I lost contact with Zonta for a brief period when I married and relocated to New Brunswick with my husband.

Several years later we moved again - to Halifax, and I was approached to join the Zonta Club of Halifax -- recruited by a former Amherst Zontian. As a member of the Zonta Club of Halifax I have served as program committee chair, planning committee chair for the 1998 fall seminar, vice --president, club president and Lt Governor.

I strongly support the objects of Zonta and the commitment to improving the status of women worldwide and I value the wonderful experiences and friendships that come from people working together for the benefit of their local, regional and international communities.

In addition to Zonta, I am a Big Sister with Big Brothers, Big Sisters and have been an active community volunteer for such events as Tall Ships 2000, Volunteer Coordinator for Softworld 2000 and Team Captain for the first Merrill Lynch Team in the Labatt 24 Hour Relay -- a major fundraiser for the Abilities Foundation.

I am a wife, daughter, sister, stepmother, friend and Zontian.

I would welcome the opportunity to continue to serve Zonta International at the District level.

LYNN GOODHUE

Candidate for Zonta International District 1 Lt. Governor 2004-06

Lynn Goodhue is the Director of Information Technology for the Center for Human Development, a large, private non-profit human service agency with programs in Western Massachusetts and Connecticut. She began her career immediately after college as a computer programmer before moving into information technology management. Lynn has been at CHD for over 10 years; prior to that she was the Director of Academic Computing, and later Director of Communications Systems, for Smith College, where she spearheaded the effort to network the Smith campus and to connect the college to the Internet.

Lynn is a firm believer in life-long learning, pursuing a master's degree in computer engineering at the age of 35, and a masters in business administration nearly 10 years later. She and her husband Fred have successfully launched two daughters, the eldest of which is now the mother of their two grandchildren. Lynn and her husband live in rural Williamsburg Massachusetts, where they enjoy the quiet woods (although Lynn wishes she could have high-speed Internet access from home...)

Lynn continues to have a keen interest in encouraging young women to consider careers in science, engineering and mathematics. Most recently she served on the advisory board for the WITI (Women in Technology International) "Invent Center" at Smith College, the first such center at a women's college. She has given presentations ranging from "I.T. Management in Human Services" for the Women in Technology Club at Bay Path College to general computer literacy workshops, often focusing on using the Internet, to many organizations, including Zonta.

Lynn joined Zonta Club of Northampton Area in 1997 after several years of attending meetings and events. In fact she became quite involved in the club a year earlier, taking over the maintenance of the Club's web site, and actively participating in the planning of the its annual Women and Power conference. She co-chaired the 1999 conference, and served as Vice President from 1998-2000, and President from 2000-2002. She was the Club delegate to both the 2000 and 2002 Zonta International Conventions. She has attended every District conference and seminar, and at least one retreat (New England and/or Canadian), since her first district conference in Rockport Maine in 1998. She currently serves as the Treasurer for the Northampton Club.

At the District level, Lynn served as the District Webmaster from 2000-2002, focusing on creating a framework to allow all District clubs to create and maintain their own web pages. She continued work on renovating the District pages of the web site through the spring of 2003 to give them a consistent, updated and professional appearance. She is currently the Area 2 Director, and is thoroughly enjoying visiting and working with the Area 2 Clubs.

Lynn's professional life involves building networks to enable data communication. Her passion is Zonta -- the networking of a global community of women, enhancing communication, support and understanding among all of us.

PAMELA GRAY, Zonta Club of Halifax, Nova Scotia

Pamela Gray was born and educated in England. Always a strong student in the arts and languages, she spent many vacation weeks in France and Germany with friends of the family, and went on to study Chinese at London University.

During her working life, as a member of curatorial staff at the British Museum and a small private collection of Chinese porcelain, she met people from all over the world. Her last position in England – Lab Director for a Nobel laureate – also gave her many opportunities to work with scientists and students from overseas.

Pamela and her husband moved to Canada "for three years" in 1978 and stayed. They spent the first 17 years in Ottawa, Canada's capital, where Pamela held a number of management positions in the telecommunications industry, several of which required travel abroad and interaction with clients from other countries.

In 1995, Pamela chose to redirect her life, geographically and philosophically, preferring to work from her home office in Halifax, Nova Scotia, as a writing and editing consultant. This allows her more time to care for her mother (now 91) who has lived with the family for 20 years. It also allows more flexibility for working to advance the status of women, locally and globally.

A member of the Zonta Club of Halifax since 1996, Pamela has attended two International Conventions, two Fall Conferences, three Fall Seminars, as well as Spring Retreats in Canada and the US. She has served as Secretary, Vice President and President in her club, and UN Chair for District 1. She is currently Area Director for District 1 Area 3.
