What is Zonta?

Zonta International is a worldwide organization of executives in business and the professions working together to advance the status of women.

What does the Zonta Club of Medford Do?

The charter for the Zonta Club of Medford, Massachusetts was granted on April 15, 1953.

As of September 2007, we have 27 members.

Our major fund-raising event is an Annual Luncheon in April. At this time, we recognize "Women Who Make a Difference." Money received allows us to make donations to local groups such as the Eastern Massachusetts Literacy Council, the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, the Medford Family Life Education Center, the Medford Public Library, and the West Medford Community Center.

In 2005, we introduced our annual Chocolate Auction.

We are currently raising funds for a Village Bank in Haiti.  We'll be working through the Foundation for International Community Assistance (FINCA), whose mission is to provide financial services to the world's lowest-income entrepreneurs so they can create jobs, build assets and improve their standard of living.  (As of September 17, 2007, we have raised $4,000 of the $5,000 required for this endeavor.)

What are some of the Zonta Club of Medford's local service projects?

We give local scholarships and grants to community groups as listed above.

We work with the Medford Family Life Education Center.

What are some of the Zonta International service projects?

Zonta International supports and administers several different international service projects and/or programs. Each biennium, Zonta International funds international service projects in association with other non-governmental organizations and often with agencies of the United Nations that work to advance the status of women. Most of the programs are in developing nations and are selected by the Zonta International Board and approved by the Zonta International membership. To learn more about Zonta International's International Service Projects for the current and past bienniums, visit the Zonta International Web Site at www.zonta.org.

Zonta International also administers several international scholarship programs, including:

the Amelia Earhart Fellowship Program, which provides post-graduate fellowships to women in the fields of aerospace-related science and aerospace-related engineering;

the Jane M. Klausman Scholarship Program, which encourages undergraduate women to enter careers and to seek leadership positions in business-related fields;

and the Young Women in Public Affairs Program, which recognizes pre-university or pre-college women students' commitment to the volunteer sector, achievements and dedication to the advancement of the status of women, and encourages more women students to enter careers in public affairs, public policy and community organizations.

In addition, many Zonta clubs sponsor Z and Golden Z Club Programs that provide mentoring and support for young high school and college-aged women. Additional information regarding these and other Zonta International Programs can be found on the Zonta International web site at www.zonta.org.
