What is Zonta?
Zonta is a global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy. Membership in a Zonta club is by invitation. To be invited to membership, a candidate shall be actively engaged in or have experience in a recognized business or profession in a decision‑making capacity.
What does the Zonta Club of Medford Do?
The charter for the Zonta Club of Medford, Massachusetts was granted on April 15, 1953. As of September 2009, we have 24 members. Our major fund-raising event is an Annual Chocolate Auction, held each February, just in time for Valentine’s Day.  Money received allows us to make donations to local groups such as the Eastern Massachusetts Literacy Council, the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, the Medford Family Life Education Center, the Medford Public Library, and the West Medford Community Center; and also the Zonta International Foundation. In 2008, we reached our goal of raising $5,000 to fund a Village Bank in Haiti.  We worked with the Foundation for International Community Assistance (FINCA), whose mission is to provide financial services to the world's lowest-income entrepreneurs so they can create jobs, build assets and improve their standard of living.
What are some of the Zonta Club of Medford's local service projects?
We give local scholarships and grants to community groups as listed above. We work with the Medford Family Life Education Center. back to top
What are some of the Zonta International service projects?
Zonta International supports and administers several different international service projects and/or programs. Each biennium, Zonta International funds international service projects in association with other non-governmental organizations and often with agencies of the United Nations that work to advance the status of women. Most of the programs are in developing nations and are selected by the Zonta International Board and approved by the Zonta International membership. Zonta International also administers several international scholarship programs, including: the Amelia Earhart Fellowship Program, which provides post-graduate fellowships to women in the fields of aerospace-related science and aerospace-related engineering; the Jane M. Klausman Scholarship Program, which encourages undergraduate women to enter careers and to seek leadership positions in business-related fields; and the Young Women in Public Affairs Program, which recognizes pre-university or pre-college women students' commitment to the volunteer sector, achievements and dedication to the advancement of the status of women, and encourages more women students to enter careers in public affairs, public policy and community organizations. In addition, many Zonta clubs sponsor Z and Golden Z Club Programs that provide mentoring and support for young high school and college-aged women. When and where does the Zonta Club of Medford meet?
The Zonta Club of Medford meets on the second Tuesday of every month (September through June, except December) at: Lawrence Memorial Hospital 170 Governors Avenue Medford, Massachusetts We gather for a light supper and converasation at 6:30 p.m. The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. Most meetings include a speaker – usually related to the mission of Zonta or one of the International Service Projects.
Am I eligible for Zonta membership?
Membership is Zonta International is by club invitation to individuals working in a decision-making capacity at least 50% of a normal workweek.
How much time does Zonta membership take?
Zonta clubs are service clubs and each club votes on local service projects and fund raising activities. Zonta members are asked to attend monthly club and committee meetings and participate in club projects. In addition, opportunities exist to attend one-day annual workshops, a two-day biannual conference or seminar and a week-long biannual international convention. The monthly meetings for the Zonta Club of Medford are generally 2 – 2-1/2 hours long; committee meetings vary in length. . back to top
