A N N U A L   $5000   S C H O L A R S H I P


The Melba Corliss Endowment  Fund
of the Zonta Club of Springfield, MA awards a $5000 scholarship annually to an undergraduate or graduate woman either entering or attending a college in the Western Massachusetts Area full time. Melba, a business executive and co-owner of the Corliss Adjustment Bureau in Springfield, was a past president and active member of Springfield Zonta Club until her death in 1996. Her generous bequest to the Springfield club has led to the establishment of this annual scholarship.

She will be talking about the new anti-human trafficking laws in Massachusetts.

What is Zonta?

Zonta International is a worldwide organization of executives in business and the professions working together to advance the status of women.


What does Our Local Club Do?
The Zonta Club of Springfield takes on local projects addressing issues of women's economic self sufficiency, legislative equality, and access to education and health.


What are some of the Zonta Club of Springfield's local service projects?
The Zonta Club of Springfield: provides funding to the Weston Rehabilitation Associates for their work with women who are in the the process of reclaiming their lives; provides two scholarships for women over thirty returning to or attending college in the area provides the Young Women in Public Affairs Award honoring a young woman who demonstrates a commitment to leadership in public policy, government and volunteer organizations sponsors Golden Z Club, a service organization at Bay Path College.


What are some of the Zonta International service projects?
Zonta International supports and administrates several different international service projects and/programs. Each biennium Zonta International sponsors international programs in association with agencies of the United Nations that work to advance the status of women. Most of the programs are in developing nations and are selected by the Zonta International Board and approved by the Zonta International membership. Zonta International also administers several international scholarship programs including: the Amelia Earhart Fellowship Program which provides post-graduate fellowships to women in the fields of aeronautics and aeronautical engineering; the Jane M. Klausman Scholarship Program which provides college scholarships to women in business; and the Young Women in Public Affairs which offers recognition and scholarships on the district and international level for outstanding young women who are making a difference in their world through service.

In addition many Zonta clubs sponsor Z and Golden Z Club Programs that provide mentoring and support for young high school and college aged women. Additional information regarding these and other Zonta International Programs can be found on the Zonta International web site at www.zonta.org.


When and where does the Springfield Club meet?

Meets on the third Monday of every month except July and August.....meetings are held at the Best Western, Riverdale Road (Rte 5), West Springfield, MA (5:30pm Social 6pm Dinner.)


Am I eligible for Zonta membership?

Membership is Zonta International is by club invitation to individuals working in a decision-making capacity at least 50% of a normal workweek.


How much time does Zonta membership take?
Zonta clubs are service clubs and each club votes on local service projects and fundraising activities. Zonta members are asked to attend monthly club and committee meetings, participate in club projects. In addition opportunities exist to attend one-day annual workshops, a two-day bi-annual conference or seminar and a weeklong bi-annual international convention.

Club meetings usually convene at 5:30 P.M. for a social and 6:00 P.M. for dinner, followed by a meeting and concludes with a short program. Committees meet at various times outside of the formal monthly meeting of the entire Club.
